Creating Rental Units Inside a Property

3 min

Once a property exists, this is how you add the individual units inside it: the full 3-step unit wizard, what each field actually affects, how photos and listing details connect to the public Makeja Homes listings portal, and how to edit a unit once it's created.

What you'll learn

  • How to open the Add Unit wizard from inside a property
  • The difference between For Rent and For Sale, and Long-Term Tenant vs Short-Stay/BnB
  • Every field in Unit Basics and what each one is used for
  • How Listing Details and photos feed the public FIND listings portal
  • What a finished unit card looks like, and how to go back and edit a unit later

Step by step

1

Open the unit wizard

From a property's page, find the Units section and click Add Unit. This opens a 3-step wizard: Unit Basics, Listing Details, and Photos, with a progress bar across the top so you always know where you are and can jump back a step if needed.

2

Set the listing type and rental style

First decide: is this unit For Rent or For Sale? Then, if it's for rent, is it a Long-Term Tenant unit (a normal month-to-month or fixed-term lease) or Short-Stay / BnB (per-night bookings)? These two choices shape what fields and workflows appear for this unit everywhere else in Makeja — rent billing cycles, lease forms, and how the unit behaves on the public listings portal.

3

Fill in Unit Basics

Unit number (e.g. "2", "A1", "Shop-5") and Type (Penthouse, 2 Bedroom, and similar categories) are required. Floor, Monthly Rent, Deposit Amount, Bedrooms, Bathrooms, and Square Feet are there to fill in as much as you know — Monthly Rent is required if the unit is for rent. Occupancy Status defaults to Vacant, which is correct for a brand-new unit with no tenant yet.

4

Click Create & Continue

This saves the unit with its basics and immediately advances you to Listing Details — the unit already exists in your system at this point, so even if you stop here, it's not lost.

5

Add Listing Details

A banner at the top of this step explains exactly why it matters: these details power search and filtering on the public listings portal, and every field here is optional if you plan to fill them in later. Listing Title and Description are free text. Amenities is a long list of toggleable tags — WiFi, Parking, Security, CCTV, Borehole Water, 24hr Water, Backup Generator, Lift/Elevator, Swimming Pool, Gym, Garden, Balcony, Intercom, Satellite TV, Solar Power, Air Conditioning, Serviced, Caretaker, Garbage Collection, Furnished Kitchen. Furnished and Pets Allowed are simple yes/no toggles, and Available From lets you set a future move-in date.

6

Upload photos

The final step accepts up to 8 photos, JPEG, PNG, or WebP, max 5MB each. If you skip this, Makeja explicitly warns you that units with photos get far more attention on the listings portal — worth remembering even if you plan to come back and add them later rather than skipping entirely.

7

Finish, and see the unit card

Click Finish and you land back on the property's Units grid, where the new unit now appears as a card: its title, a VACANT or OCCUPIED badge, bed/bath/sqft counts, a preview of its amenity tags, and its monthly rent. From here you get View (the full unit page) and Assign (to put a tenant into it, covered in the Adding a Tenant tutorial) for a vacant unit.

8

Editing a unit later

Open a unit and use Edit to change anything after the fact. The edit screen shows a Current State summary at the top (status, rent, deposit, bedrooms, bathrooms) so you can see what's already set before changing it, then the same Basic Information, Financial, and Unit Features fields pre-filled with the unit's current values — only change what actually needs updating.

Tips

  • Decide For Rent vs For Sale and Long-Term vs Short-Stay before filling in anything else — changing these later can affect how the unit's billing and lease workflows behave.
  • You don't have to finish Listing Details or Photos in one sitting. The unit is already created after step 1, and Skip for now is always available on the later steps.
  • A unit with photos and a filled-out description is what actually shows up well on the public FIND listings portal — worth doing properly for any unit you plan to market, not just fill in for your own records.
